  • Add fiber to improve your pet’s health

Add fiber to improve your pet’s health

Fiber is a component that is readily found in every processed dog food. Yet adding a little extra fiber in their diet would definitely lead to a better colon health, fights obesity, prevents diarrhea and constipation as well as helps pets battling diabetes mellitus.

Let’s have a look at some of the fiber rich foods:

Bran:  It is the outer shell of the grain usually removed during processing. It could be rice bran, wheat bran or oat bran. It is used as a common remedy to prevent constipation. Make sure it is soaked in water before serving it to your pet as they digest better.

Apple:  An apple a day keeps the doctor away! It works for humans as well as their pets. They are rich in antioxidants, calcium, vitamin K and C and pectin but make sure you remove the core and the seeds as they contain cyanide which is toxic when consumed by pets.

Pumpkin: Pumpkins are a rich source of antioxidant, vitamin A and beta carotene, potassium and iron. Adding a portion of it to your pet’s daily diet would improve their urinary health and prevent diarrhea and constipation. It would also lessen the chances of your pet developing cancer.

Brown rice: Brown rice has three times more fiber than white rice. It plays a beneficial role in cleaning up the intestinal tract which would otherwise be the breeding place for tapeworms and roundworms in dogs. You can add a vegetable or meat broth to accompany the brown rice.

Vegetables: Vegetables are rich source of fiber. You can serve them boiled or raw or mixed with their broth. Always give them fresh vegetables and avoid the tinned ones as they are high in sodium which is harmful to pets.

A well balanced diet accompanied by regular exercise is essential for the well being of your pet.So before making any dietary change it is always good to consult your local vet.

  • 5 things your pet teaches you

5 things your pet teaches you

The key to a happier life is very simple – appreciate the little things around you, and who better to teach it to you than your four legged buddy! A little cuddle, a run around the park, it is bound to bring joy to both man and his animal.

Let’s have a look at 5 things you can learn from your pet:

Learn to celebrate – The first person to greet you when you come home is your pet. Despite the bummer of a day that you had it will definitely lift your spirits up by the gentle licks and cuddles from your loving hound. The simple joys of life are what you must appreciate and hold onto and who better to teach you the ways and means to find it other than your adoring pet!

Just being present – In times of grief and mourning no one else can help you heal faster than your faithful pet. A lot of people do not know what to say or do to make the person feel better yet what is important is not what you say but what you do not. Just quietly being there for them is what loyal pets do.

Express your love – Pets have nothing to hide, if they love you they express it. This approach is essential for the survival of any relationship. Expressing your love in a thoughtful and meaningful way will strengthen the bond you share with your partner.

Be independent – We can learn a lot from cats. They are self sufficient and love to do things their way. A person can be a lot happier when he is not worried about what other people think or say. Do what you have to do for yourself and not to please others, it may seem selfish but yet your happiness is what is most important!

Learn to co-exist – Live and let live is the easiest mantra for happy living. If dogs and cats can co-exist in a warm and loving environment so can two different individuals. All it takes is a little patience, tolerance and perseverance!

  • Pets – the most lovable shrinks

Pets – the most lovable shrinks

An animal’s eyes have the power to speak a great language.’ –  Martin Buber

He is very perceptive. He knows your every mood and is with you through good times and bad. No, I am not talking about your dream man but your ever faithful furry friend! It is a fact that owning a pet is as good as having a live-in shrink albeit a fun loving kind rather than the serious prude types!

Let’s look at a few ways that pets help people overcome depression

They calm you down – Just looking at that adorable face makes you all mushy, and when he goes about his daily antics like running away with your wife’s lingerie while your spouse chases it like greased lightning! It is bound to bring a broad grin whenever you reminisce. Studies have proven that just having your pets around lowers your blood pressure and heart rate. The good news is that heart patients recover faster after surgery and survive longer when pets are around them.

Pets accept you as you are  Pets offer unconditional love and never judge or critique you. You can talk to them about your worries and they will calmly listen to you and give you a warm cuddle. Just their presence will alleviate your loneliness.

Pets make you responsible – Taking care of the daily needs of your pets increase your self -worth and self esteem, thereby promoting positive mental health.

The healing touch – Just a warm cuddle and oodles of licks from your furry chum is bound to bring down your blood pressure and heart rate thus reducing stress as it promotes the release of oxytocin, a hormone known to reduce the stress levels.

So go ahead, give in to the loving demands of your four legged friend!

  • Know your Basic Animal Handling Tips

Know your Basic Animal Handling Tips

When muzzling a dog go from his side and try not to put your hands over his face, instead, come from behind the dog as this is much safer and means minimal stress for your dog friend.

    • To make an emergency muzzle use available material and tie a loop around the dog’s nose, make sure it’s not too loose or too tight, now tie it and secure it under the chin then behind the ears.
    • Never pick up a rabbit by its ears, it’s the equivalent of someone pulling you up by your hair!
    • When picking up a rabbit, always support its hind quarters to avoid spinal injury. Many rabbits jump after being picked up and end up with broken backs, avoid this at all cost by holding and securing its legs. Surprisingly this will calm the rabbit rather than cause any stress.
    • When picking up a big dog place one hand under the chest and the other hand under the abdomen or around the hind legs, then hold the dog against your body and lift.
    • When picking up a cat, use both hands to pick it up by the tummy, then hold it by your chest and use both hands to secure it, speak reassuringly to make your cat friend feel safe.

  • Deworming, Rewarding & Punishing – Necessary Evil to Pet Parenting :)

Deworming, Rewarding & Punishing – Necessary Evil to Pet Parenting 🙂

Deworming your pets: Deworming items can be purchased from pet stores, vet clinics or even at some supermarkets. Puppies and kittens need to be dewormed every two weeks until 12 weeks on then do it every 3-6 months.

Rewarding your pets: Timing is everything! The reward must occur with 1-2 seconds of the behaviour you wish to reward. Rewards can come in many different forms like food treats, praise, or their favourite toy.

Punishing your pets: Punishment can seem useful but hardly ever works, it is only guaranteed to upset your pets! Punishment makes it hard for pets and animals to learn as they are too busy experiencing fear and stress to figure out what you’re trying to accomplish. If you punish your pet at the wrong time they will associate the punishment with the wrong thing and feel disheartened and confused. However there are ways you can punish your pet without being overly harsh, is your dog excessively barking? Tell him to stop in an authoritarian voice then put him in another room until he stops, then let him out to re-join the family again, he will quickly get sick of being locked away and learn his lesson.

Why adopting a stray dog is a sensible option

“Happiness is a warm puppy” – Charles M Schulz

Are you in search of a dog who is as loyal as a Golden Retriever, as smart as a German Shepherd and who can run almost as fast as a greyhound? Well, there is one such fine specimen in the canine world – the Indian stray dog.

Here is looking at why adopting the local stray dogs a practical option:

    • Most of the imported breeds are unsuited to the sub-tropical climate, whereas the Indian stray dogs are acclimatised to all the seasons in the tropical zone.
    • They follow you wherever you go and are your self-appointed bodyguards. Given the increase in the crime rates in the city it will definitely calm your fears to know that your faithful hound is just a step behind you protecting you from antisocial elements.
    • Stray dogs do not have genetic health issues as opposed to pure breeds as they have been on streets for a considerable amount of time and used to harsh conditions.
